Courage

Virtues · 7 days

Courage is not the absence of fear, but the grace to choose what is right even when it costs something. Praying for courage opens our hearts to the Holy Spirit, who strengthens us to act with faith, love, and steady hope. Over these seven days, ask God for the kind of courage that serves others and keeps you close to Christ.

Day 1 · St. Joan of Arc

St. Joan of Arc followed God’s call in a time of war and intense pressure. She faced misunderstanding and hostility with remarkable steadiness. Her courage was rooted in prayer and a desire to do God’s will. She reminds us that God can strengthen the weak to do difficult things.

Lord Jesus, when fear rises in me, anchor my heart in You. Give me the courage to choose what is right, even when it feels costly or lonely. Teach me to listen for Your voice and to act with humility and strength. I trust that Your grace is enough for today. Amen.
Challenge

Name one thing you’ve been avoiding out of fear; take one small step toward it today (a phone call, an email, a conversation, or a clear decision).

Day 2 · St. Maximilian Kolbe

St. Maximilian Kolbe poured out his life in love, even in the darkness of Auschwitz. He chose self-giving courage over self-preservation. His bold faith was nourished by devotion and daily surrender to God. He shows that courage becomes heroic when it is shaped by charity.

God of love, strengthen me to be brave in serving others. When I want to protect myself first, give me the freedom to love. Help me speak truth with gentleness and stand firm without bitterness. Make my courage an offering of charity. Amen.
Challenge

Do one quiet act of sacrificial love today: give your time, attention, or comfort to someone who needs it—without seeking recognition.

Day 3 · St. Catherine of Siena

St. Catherine of Siena spoke with fearless clarity in a divided Church and troubled society. Though young and often underestimated, she pursued peace and reform with spiritual boldness. Her courage flowed from deep prayer and love for Christ. She teaches us to be brave and faithful with our words.

Holy Spirit, guard my tongue and strengthen my heart. Give me courage to speak the truth in love, without anger or pride. Help me to listen well, respond wisely, and seek peace where I can. Let my words reflect Christ. Amen.
Challenge

Have one honest, kind conversation you’ve been postponing—prepare by praying for the other person first, then speak simply and respectfully.

Day 4 · St. Thomas More

St. Thomas More remained faithful to his conscience even when it cost him his career and life. He served his country with integrity, but refused to compromise what he knew was right. His courage was calm, thoughtful, and anchored in God. He encourages us to stand firm with peace.

Lord, form my conscience and steady my will. When I’m tempted to compromise for comfort or approval, give me quiet courage. Teach me to act with integrity and to accept the consequences with trust in You. Keep my heart peaceful and faithful. Amen.
Challenge

Choose one area where you can practice integrity today: tell the truth, keep a promise, or correct a small wrong—without making excuses.

Day 5 · St. Ignatius of Loyola

St. Ignatius of Loyola learned courage through conversion and spiritual discipline. He faced setbacks, misunderstandings, and long seasons of growth with perseverance. He taught believers to recognize God’s voice and choose the good decisively. He reminds us that courage often looks like faithful perseverance.

Jesus, help me to be brave in the long obedience of daily life. When I feel discouraged, renew my hope and strengthen my resolve. Give me the courage to begin again and to keep going with You. Lead me in Your way, one step at a time. Amen.
Challenge

Do a 10-minute prayer review today (what gave life, what drained it) and make one concrete choice for tomorrow that aligns with God’s call.

Day 6 · St. Perpetua

St. Perpetua faced martyrdom with a heart strengthened by faith. In the face of fear and separation, she clung to Christ and encouraged others. Her witness shows that God can give courage beyond our natural strength. She teaches us to trust God when we feel most vulnerable.

Lord Jesus, be near to me in my weakness. When I feel overwhelmed, remind me that You are stronger than my fear. Give me courage to remain faithful in small trials and big ones. Hold me in Your peace today. Amen.
Challenge

When anxiety or fear surfaces today, pause and pray slowly: “Jesus, I trust in You,” three times, then take the next right action.

Day 7 · St. Peter the Apostle

St. Peter knew both fear and boldness: he denied Jesus, then was restored and became a fearless witness. His courage grew from mercy, forgiveness, and the power of the Holy Spirit. He reminds us that failure is not the end—God can rebuild us. True courage is returning to Christ and standing up again.

Merciful Lord, thank You for never giving up on me. When I fall into fear or weakness, lift me up and renew my courage. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit so I can follow You with a steady heart. Make me a brave witness of Your love. Amen.
Challenge

Go to confession if you can this week; if not, make a sincere act of contrition today and choose one concrete change you will practice tomorrow.
