Grieving a Loved One

Healing & Hope · 7 days

Grief is a real expression of love, and bringing it to God is a gentle act of trust. Over these seven days, you’ll be invited to mourn honestly, ask for consolation, and place your loved one in God’s merciful care. The Lord who wept at Lazarus’ tomb is close to you now.

Day 1 · St. Martha of Bethany

St. Martha knew the pain of loss when her brother Lazarus died. In her grief, she spoke with Jesus honestly—and heard words of hope. Her story reminds us that faith can coexist with tears. She teaches us to bring our sorrow directly to the Lord.

Jesus, You wept at the tomb of Your friend, and You understand my grief. Hold me close in this sorrow and calm what feels overwhelming. Receive my loved one into Your mercy and light. Strengthen my faith when questions rise, and give me the grace to trust You today. Amen.

Day 2 · St. Monica

St. Monica lived through years of worry and heartbreak, pouring her pain into prayer. She persevered with trusting love, even when answers seemed delayed. Her tenderness shows how to carry grief without losing hope. She encourages us to keep praying when our hearts feel tired.

Lord, like St. Monica, I place my aching heart into Your hands. Teach me to pray when words fail and to hope when I feel empty. Comfort me with the knowledge that my loved one is known and loved by You. Give me patience with my own healing, one day at a time. Amen.

Day 3 · St. Elizabeth Ann Seton

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton became a widow and faced real uncertainty and sorrow. In her loss, she clung to Christ and found strength to keep loving those entrusted to her. Her life shows that grief can deepen faith and compassion. She reminds us that God can carry us through the unthinkable.

God of all consolation, You sustained St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in widowhood and grief. Sustain me now as I miss the one I love. When sadness returns, meet me with Your steady presence. Help me to keep living with love, while entrusting my loved one to Your care. Amen.

Day 4 · St. Ignatius of Loyola

St. Ignatius learned to notice God’s movements in the heart—both consolation and desolation. He teaches that dark seasons are not a sign of abandonment. With patience and honesty, we can find God even in sorrow. His wisdom helps us take small steps when grief feels heavy.

Lord, when my heart feels dark and unsettled, help me remember You are near. Give me the grace to notice small signs of Your care—through prayer, people, and quiet moments. In my desolation, keep me from despair and guide me toward peace. I entrust my loved one to Your mercy. Amen.

Day 5 · St. Catherine of Siena

St. Catherine of Siena spoke boldly to God and trusted His love in difficult times. She believed Christ is close to the suffering and draws near to the brokenhearted. Her courage helps us bring even strong emotions into prayer. She reminds us that God can hold our questions and our pain.

Jesus, gentle Savior, receive my sorrow and all that I cannot explain. Help me speak to You honestly, without fear, and rest in Your love. Heal what is wounded in me, and bring my loved one to the joy of Your presence. Give me courage to face today with faith. Amen.

Day 6 · St. John of the Cross

St. John of the Cross wrote about times when God can feel hidden, yet faith still endures. He teaches that darkness is not the end of the story. In suffering, we can be purified in love and held by God even when we cannot feel it. His witness offers hope for those grieving deeply.

Lord, in moments when You feel far away, keep me faithful. Hold me when my grief is quiet and when it is sharp. Teach me to trust that Your love is working even in darkness. Lead my loved one into Your light, and lead me toward peace. Amen.

Day 7 · St. Faustina Kowalska

St. Faustina proclaimed Jesus’ Divine Mercy for every soul. She trusted that God’s compassion is greater than our fears and regrets. Her message brings comfort when we worry about the dead or feel helpless. She points us to prayer, mercy, and hope in Christ.

Jesus, I trust in You. In Your Divine Mercy, receive my loved one and forgive every sin and weakness. Console my heart, especially when I replay memories or carry regrets. Help me live today with mercy and hope, until we are reunited in You. Amen.
