He survived the Nazi occupation, worked in a quarry and a chemical plant, and studied for the priesthood in secret. As Pope John Paul II, he led the Church for more than twenty-six years, traveled the world, helped peacefully topple oppression in Eastern Europe, and tirelessly defended the dignity of every human life. His first words to the world — "Do not be afraid!" — still echo. The faithful turn to him in their struggles with fear, in their care for families and young people, in suffering and illness, and whenever they need courage to follow Christ.
A novena is a prayer offered over nine days, modeled on the apostles and Mary who prayed together awaiting the Holy Spirit. Day 1 · Do Not Be Afraid
