Our Lady of Sorrows

Novena · 9 days

Our Lady of Sorrows is the Blessed Virgin Mary honored in the deep griefs she carried as the Mother of Jesus. The Church remembers her Seven Sorrows: the prophecy of Simeon, the flight into Egypt, the loss of the Child in the Temple, the meeting on the way to Calvary, standing at the foot of the Cross, receiving the body of her Son, and laying him in the tomb. Because she walked through such anguish without losing her trust in God, the faithful turn to her in seasons of loss, illness, fear, broken relationships, and quiet despair, asking her to pray with them and for them before the Lord.

A novena is a prayer offered over nine days, drawn from the days the disciples spent in prayer with Mary before Pentecost. It is not a magic formula or a way to compel God; it is a path of trust and perseverance, a slow turning of the heart toward the One who alone gives every grace. As you pray these nine days, do not rush. Let Our Lady of Sorrows accompany you, and let God meet you gently in your need.

Day 1 · Drawing Near in Our Pain

Mary did not run from sorrow; she stayed present to it and to God. When pain comes, our first instinct is often to numb it or flee. Today, simply draw near as she did. Bring your honest heart to prayer, without polishing it. Our Lady of Sorrows knows what it is to ache, and she stands beside you, gently turning your gaze toward the Father who waits.

Our Lady of Sorrows, you who knew grief and yet never let go of God, pray with me as I draw near to him today. Take my unspoken pain into your gentle care and carry it with me to your Son. Father, I come to you just as I am, weary and in need. You are the source of all comfort and every grace, and I trust that you see me. Teach me to remain close to you, even when my heart is heavy. Through Mary's prayers, give me the courage to begin this novena with honesty and hope, believing that you are near to the brokenhearted. In the silence of your heart, bring your intention before God. Amen.

Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us.

Day 2 · Trusting Through the Unknown

When Simeon foretold that a sword would pierce her heart, Mary did not understand all that lay ahead, yet she kept trusting. We rarely see the whole road. Today, name one uncertainty you are carrying and choose, with her, to trust God within it. Trust is not the absence of fear; it is leaning on the One who holds the future when you cannot see it.

Our Lady of Sorrows, you received Simeon's hard words and still trusted God's plan. Pray for me as I face what I cannot understand, and ask the Lord to steady my anxious heart. Father, I do not see the road ahead, but I believe you are good and that you walk it before me. You alone give the grace I need for each step. Help me to release my need for control and to rest in your care. With Mary at my side, let me trust you in the unknown, certain that nothing I face is hidden from your love. In the silence of your heart, bring your intention before God. Amen.

Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us.

Day 3 · Finding God in the Flight

Mary fled into Egypt as a refugee, far from home and safety, yet God was with her in the displacement. Sometimes life uproots us, and we feel exiled from the comfort we knew. Today, remember that God is not confined to the places we have lost. He goes with you into unfamiliar territory. Wherever you find yourself, even far from peace, he is already there.

Our Lady of Sorrows, you carried your Child to safety through a frightening exile. Pray for me when I feel displaced, unsettled, or far from all that once felt secure. Lord, you were present to the Holy Family in a foreign land, and you are present to me now. You are the giver of refuge and peace; I cannot manufacture them on my own. Lead me to safety of heart, even when my circumstances will not change. Through Mary's intercession, help me to find you in the very places I would rather not be, and to trust that you have not abandoned me. In the silence of your heart, bring your intention before God. Amen.

Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us.

Day 4 · Seeking What Seems Lost

For three days Mary searched for Jesus, lost in the Temple, and her anguish was real before she found him. Sometimes God himself can feel absent, and our prayers seem to echo back unanswered. Her example tells us to keep seeking. Do not mistake God's silence for his absence. Today, keep looking, keep knocking, and trust that the seeking heart is never finally turned away.

Our Lady of Sorrows, you knew the anguish of searching and the joy of finding. Pray for me in the times God feels distant, and ask him to draw near to my searching heart. Father, when I cannot feel you, help me to seek you still. You are the one I truly long for, and only you can satisfy this hunger. Do not let me give up before the dawn. With Mary's perseverance, let me keep seeking you faithfully, confident that you reward those who do not stop reaching for you. In the silence of your heart, bring your intention before God. Amen.

Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us.

Day 5 · Walking the Road of Suffering

On the way to Calvary, Mary met her suffering Son and could not spare him the cross, yet she did not turn away. There are sufferings we cannot fix, in ourselves or in those we love, and the temptation is to look elsewhere. Today, ask for the grace simply to stay, to accompany, to love without solving. Presence in suffering is itself a profound gift, as Mary showed.

Our Lady of Sorrows, you met your Son on his hardest road and refused to look away. Pray for me when I face suffering I cannot remove, mine or another's. Lord, give me the strength to stay present to pain without despairing. You alone can bring meaning out of suffering and grace where I see only loss. I place this burden in your hands. Through Mary, who walked the road of sorrow with love, teach me to accompany others and to let you accompany me, never walking alone. In the silence of your heart, bring your intention before God. Amen.

Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us.

Day 6 · Standing Faithfully at the Cross

At the foot of the Cross, Mary stood. She did not collapse and she did not flee; she remained, faithful to the end. There are seasons when all we can do is stand, when faithfulness simply means not walking away. Today, ask for the grace of endurance. You do not need to feel strong. You only need to stay, with Mary, beneath the weight, until the light returns.

Our Lady of Sorrows, you stood faithfully beneath the Cross when all seemed lost. Pray for me in my darkest hour, that I may remain rooted in faith and not flee. Father, when I have no strength left, be my strength. Endurance is your gift, not my achievement, and I ask you for it now. Hold me up when I cannot hold myself. With Mary standing beside me, let me remain faithful through the hardest hours, trusting that you are working even where I cannot see. In the silence of your heart, bring your intention before God. Amen.

Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us.

Day 7 · Receiving Our Wounds with Love

Mary received the broken body of her Son into her arms, holding her grief tenderly rather than rejecting it. We are often ashamed of our wounds and try to hide them. Today, practice receiving your own sorrow with gentleness, as she did. Your wounds are not your failure. Held before God and entrusted to his mercy, they can become the very place where his healing begins.

Our Lady of Sorrows, you received your wounded Son with tender love. Pray for me as I learn to hold my own brokenness without shame, and ask the Lord to meet me there. Lord, I bring you the wounds I would rather hide. You are the healer of every hurt, and I cannot heal myself. Receive what I carry and touch it with your mercy. Through Mary's gentleness, teach me to treat my own heart kindly and to trust that you bring new life out of broken things. In the silence of your heart, bring your intention before God. Amen.

Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us.

Day 8 · Surrendering in the Silence

Mary laid her Son in the tomb and waited through the silence of Holy Saturday, not yet seeing the resurrection. Surrender is the hardest prayer: to let go of what we love and place it fully in God's hands. Today, name what you are clutching and gently open your hands. Surrender is not defeat; it is trust handing over to the One who alone can raise the dead.

Our Lady of Sorrows, you laid your Son to rest and waited in trust through the silence. Pray for me as I learn to let go and place my deepest concerns in God's hands. Father, into your keeping I surrender what I cannot control and what I love too tightly. You alone hold the power to bring life from waiting and dawn from the dark. I trust you with what I release. With Mary in the quiet of that long Saturday, help me to wait in hope, believing that you are never finished, even when all seems still. In the silence of your heart, bring your intention before God. Amen.

Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us.

Day 9 · Rising to Hope and New Life

Mary's sorrows opened onto the joy of Easter morning; the One she buried rose again. Sorrow does not have the last word for those who trust in God. After nine days of accompanying her griefs, lift your eyes to hope. Whatever you have carried into this novena, carry it forward in the confidence that God can raise new life from it, in his time and in his way.

Our Lady of Sorrows, your tears gave way to the joy of the Resurrection. Pray for me as I rise from these nine days, that the hope of Easter may take root in my heart. Father, you turned your Son's death into life and Mary's grief into joy. You are the source of all hope, and I trust you to bring resurrection where I have known only loss. Renew me by your grace. With Mary, who rejoiced at the empty tomb, let me walk forward in hope, carrying everything I have prayed into the light of your love. In the silence of your heart, bring your intention before God. Amen.

Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, I thank you for the gift of these nine days, and for Our Lady of Sorrows, who has prayed with me and for me throughout this novena. She has shown me how to draw near in pain, to trust through the unknown, to stand faithfully at the cross, and to surrender into your hands, always pointing me back to you, the source of every grace. I am grateful that I have not walked this road alone. Grant me, I pray, perseverance in faith when the way is dark, hope that does not waver in waiting, and love that holds fast to you and to others through every sorrow. Let the lessons of Mary's faithful heart take root in mine, so that I may follow her Son more closely each day. Into your loving care I entrust all the intentions I have carried through these days, both spoken and unspoken. You know my heart better than I know it myself. Do with them according to your wisdom and your mercy, and let me rest in the peace of knowing that I am held by you. Amen.
