Humility

Virtues · 7 days

Humility helps you live in the truth: you are loved by God, gifted by Him, and dependent on His grace. It frees you from comparison and self-protection so you can serve with peace. Over these seven days, ask the Lord for a humble heart that is both honest and joyful.

Day 1 · St. Augustine of Hippo

St. Augustine was a brilliant teacher who learned to surrender his pride to Christ. His conversion showed him that truth and freedom begin with admitting our need for God. He often taught that humility is the foundation of the spiritual life. His life reminds us that God can turn even a restless heart into a place of grace.

Lord Jesus, You humbled Yourself to lift me up. Show me where pride is shaping my choices, and replace it with Your gentle truth. Teach me to receive gifts with gratitude and to admit limits without fear. Give me the joy of belonging to You. Amen.
Challenge

Today, make one simple act of humility: ask for help with something small you normally insist on doing alone.

Day 2 · St. Philip Neri

St. Philip Neri was known for his joy and for gently deflating vanity with humor. He served the poor and guided souls in Rome with warmth and simplicity. He chose hidden acts of humility to stay close to Christ. His witness shows that humility can be light-filled, not gloomy.

Holy Spirit, free me from needing to be noticed or praised. Teach me to laugh at myself and to rejoice in others’ gifts. Give me a humble heart that serves without calculation. Let my joy come from You alone. Amen.
Challenge

Do one good deed today anonymously (a small gift, chore, or message of encouragement) and do not mention it to anyone.

Day 3 · St. John the Baptist

St. John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus with courage and simplicity. He pointed away from himself and toward Christ: “He must increase; I must decrease.” He accepted his role without grasping for more. His humility made him a clear witness to the Light.

Jesus, make me a true witness who points to You. Help me decrease where my ego crowds You out. Give me courage to do what is right without needing recognition. May my life say, “Look to Christ.” Amen.
Challenge

In one conversation today, intentionally listen more than you speak: ask two sincere questions before sharing your own opinion.

Day 4 · St. Teresa of Avila

St. Teresa of Avila reformed religious life through deep prayer and practical leadership. She taught that humility is “walking in truth,” not thinking poorly of yourself. She trusted God’s grace even while seeing her weaknesses clearly. Her life shows humble confidence rooted in prayer.

Lord, teach me to walk in truth. Keep me from self-exaltation and from discouragement. Help me see myself as You see me: loved, called, and in need of grace. Give me steady humility that leads to faithful action. Amen.
Challenge

Write down one strength and one weakness you notice in yourself today, then offer both to God with a simple “Thank You” and “Help me.”

Day 5 · St. Martin de Porres

St. Martin de Porres served in a Dominican community with remarkable humility and charity. He cared for the sick, the poor, and those on the margins with tenderness. He embraced unnoticed tasks and treated everyone with dignity. His life shows humility expressed as love in action.

God of mercy, shape my heart after Yours. Give me eyes to notice the overlooked and courage to serve in small ways. Remove prejudice, impatience, and superiority from me. Make my humility practical and my charity sincere. Amen.
Challenge

Choose one “lowly” task today (cleaning, helping, yielding your place, running an errand) and do it cheerfully for someone else.

Day 6 · St. Ignatius of Loyola

St. Ignatius of Loyola learned humility through conversion and disciplined spiritual growth. He taught discernment: noticing where pride seeks control and where God invites surrender. His Spiritual Exercises help people choose God’s will over self-will. He shows that humility strengthens freedom and mission.

Lord, I place my plans and reputation into Your hands. Teach me to notice when I seek control, and lead me into trust. Give me the grace to choose Your will with a generous heart. Let my life be for Your greater glory, not my own. Amen.
Challenge

Before a decision today, pause for 60 seconds and pray: “Lord, what leads me to love?” Then choose the simpler, more charitable option.

Day 7 · St. Edith Stein (Teresa Benedicta of the Cross)

St. Edith Stein was a philosopher who became Catholic, then a Carmelite nun. She sought truth sincerely and accepted a hidden life of prayer and sacrifice. In suffering, she entrusted herself to Christ with quiet courage. Her humility shows in obedience to truth and love even when it costs.

Jesus, Truth made flesh, keep my heart sincere. Give me humility to accept correction, to change, and to follow where You lead. When I feel small or misunderstood, anchor me in Your love. Make my life an offering of trust. Amen.
Challenge

Ask one trusted person for gentle feedback on a habit you want to grow in, and receive it without defending yourself—just say, “Thank you.”
