Our Lady of Guadalupe
Novena · 9 days
In December 1531, on the hill of Tepeyac near Mexico City, the Mother of God appeared to a poor Indigenous convert named Juan Diego. She spoke to him in his own language, called herself his loving mother, and left her image miraculously imprinted on his humble cloak, where it remains to this day. She came not to the powerful but to the lowly, gathering a wounded people into her tenderness. Ever since, the faithful have turned to Our Lady of Guadalupe in times of hardship, fear, and uncertainty: for the protection of the unborn and of families, for healing, for the poor and the overlooked, for those longing for hope when the world feels cold.
A novena is nine days of prayer, a small school of trust and perseverance. It is not a magic formula and it does not bend God to our will; rather, it slowly opens our hearts to His will and deepens our confidence in His love. Each day we ask Our Lady of Guadalupe to pray with us and for us, knowing that she leads us, always, to her Son. Come with whatever you carry. Pray simply and faithfully, and let her gentle words to Juan Diego rest upon you: "Am I not here, I who am your Mother?"
Day 1 · Trusting Her Maternal Care
To Juan Diego, frightened and small, Our Lady said: "Am I not here, I who am your Mother?" She did not promise an easy road, but her abiding presence. Today, begin this novena by letting yourself be a child again before God. Whatever burden you carry, you do not carry it alone. Her care is real, and it leads always to her Son.
Our Lady of Guadalupe, you came to Juan Diego as a tender mother to a fearful child. Take me, too, under your mantle, and pray for me as I begin these nine days, that I may trust the One who made me.
Father of mercy, You alone are the source of every grace. Through the intercession of the Mother of Your Son, quiet my fears and teach me to rest in Your care. Help me to believe that You are near, even when I cannot feel You.
Give me a child's heart, Lord, simple and open, ready to follow wherever You lead.
In the silence of your heart, bring your intention before God.
Amen.
Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us.
Day 2 · Hearing God's Gentle Call
Our Lady spoke to Juan Diego in his own language, on an ordinary morning, as he walked an ordinary path. God still calls us this way: gently, in the midst of daily life. Today, slow down enough to listen. The Lord is not far off. He speaks in Scripture, in conscience, in the quiet nudge toward the good. Ask Mary to help you hear.
Our Lady of Guadalupe, you listened with a humble heart and carried God's word to others. Pray for me, that I may grow quiet enough to recognize the Lord's voice amid the noise of my days.
Father, You speak to those who are willing to hear. Open my ears and soften my heart, that I may not miss the ways You call me to love, to repent, and to trust. You are the giver of every light; I have nothing apart from You.
Speak, Lord, and grant me the courage to answer.
In the silence of your heart, bring your intention before God.
Amen.
Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us.
Day 3 · Embracing Humility Like Juan Diego
God chose a poor man to carry a message that would convert millions. Juan Diego thought himself unworthy, "a nobody," yet the Lord lifts up the lowly. Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is the freedom of knowing every good gift comes from God. Today, lay down the need to prove your worth, and let yourself be loved as you are.
Our Lady of Guadalupe, you delighted in the humble heart of Juan Diego and walked with him in his littleness. Pray for me, that I may set aside pride and pretense and stand honestly before God.
Lord, You resist the proud but pour out grace on the humble. Free me from comparing and grasping. Remind me that my value rests in being Your beloved child, not in what I achieve. Every good in me is Your gift.
Make me lowly enough to receive all You wish to give.
In the silence of your heart, bring your intention before God.
Amen.
Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us.
Day 4 · Finding Comfort in Sorrow
When Juan Diego's uncle lay dying, his heart was heavy with grief. Our Lady met him there and turned his sorrow into hope. She does not dismiss our pain; she enters it with us. If you are grieving or weary today, bring it honestly to her. She will pray with you and carry you to the One who wipes away every tear.
Our Lady of Guadalupe, comfort of the afflicted, you met Juan Diego in his sorrow and did not turn away. Pray for me in whatever pain I carry, and stay close as I bring it to your Son.
Father of all consolation, You are near to the brokenhearted. I do not always understand my suffering, but I trust that You can bring good even from it. Hold me when I am weak, and let Your peace, which the world cannot give, settle over me.
Be my refuge, Lord, today and in every dark hour.
In the silence of your heart, bring your intention before God.
Amen.
Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us.
Day 5 · Surrendering Our Fears
"Let nothing trouble you," Our Lady seemed to say to a man surrounded by uncertainty. Fear shrinks our world and whispers that we are alone. But faith answers: God is in control, and He is good. Today, name your fears honestly and place each one in His hands. Mary, who feared nothing because she trusted everything to God, will pray for you.
Our Lady of Guadalupe, your presence calmed the troubled heart of Juan Diego. Pray for me, that the fears tangling my heart may loosen in the light of God's love.
Lord, You tell us again and again, "Do not be afraid." I want to believe You. Take the worries I cling to and teach me to trust Your providence. You hold the future I cannot see, and You hold me. Nothing reaches me that has not first passed through Your love.
Replace my fear with confidence in You.
In the silence of your heart, bring your intention before God.
Amen.
Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us.
Day 6 · Offering Our Roses
Our Lady asked Juan Diego to gather Castilian roses blooming impossibly in winter, and to carry them as a sign. They were small, fragile, unexpected gifts. So are our daily offerings: a kind word, a patient hour, a quiet sacrifice. Today, gather your own "roses"and offer them to God. Nothing given in love is too small for Him to use.
Our Lady of Guadalupe, you taught Juan Diego that simple gifts, offered in faith, become signs of God's glory. Pray for me, that I may give freely what I have, however small it seems.
Father, You multiply what is placed in Your hands. Receive the ordinary works of my day and make them fruitful for Your kingdom. Teach me that love, not size, is what You measure. You are the One who gives the increase; I only sow.
Let my whole life become an offering pleasing to You.
In the silence of your heart, bring your intention before God.
Amen.
Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us.
Day 7 · Carrying Hope to Others
The image on the tilma converted a continent and consoled a suffering people. Our Lady's mission was never only for Juan Diego; it overflowed to countless others. Faith is meant to be shared. Today, ask yourself whom you might encourage. A word of hope, a moment of kindness, can carry God's love to someone who badly needs it.
Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mother of the Americas, through you the light of the Gospel reached a weary people. Pray for me, that I may become a bearer of hope to those around me.
Lord, You call me not to hoard Your goodness but to share it. Make me attentive to the lonely, the discouraged, and the forgotten. Let Your love flow through my words and actions, for it is Your love, not mine, that heals. Use me as You will.
Send me, Lord, to comfort others as You have comforted me.
In the silence of your heart, bring your intention before God.
Amen.
Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us.
Day 8 · Persevering in Faith
Juan Diego returned to the bishop more than once, despite doubt and dismissal. He did not give up. Perseverance is the quiet courage to keep going when results are slow and the way is hard. As this novena nears its end, renew your resolve. God honors steadfast hearts. Keep praying, keep trusting, even when you cannot yet see the answer.
Our Lady of Guadalupe, faithful and steadfast, you strengthened Juan Diego when his courage faltered. Pray for me, that I may persevere in prayer and not lose heart.
Father, You are faithful even when I am weak. When discouragement comes, hold me steady. Help me to trust Your timing, which is never late, and to keep walking the path of faith one day at a time. You finish the good work You begin.
Grant me endurance, Lord, until I see Your goodness fulfilled.
In the silence of your heart, bring your intention before God.
Amen.
Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us.
Day 9 · Resting Beneath Her Mantle
"Am I not here, I who am your Mother? Are you not under my shadow and protection?" These words crown our journey. After nine days of prayer, rest in this assurance: you are held. Our Lady gathers all your intentions and brings them to her Son, who alone grants every grace. Leave this novena in peace, trusting that God has heard.
Our Lady of Guadalupe, you promised Juan Diego your shadow and protection. Pray for me now, gathering all I have entrusted to you over these nine days and carrying it to the Lord.
Father, You have listened to every word, even the ones I could not speak. I place my whole heart, with all its longings and burdens, into Your hands. Whatever You grant and whatever You withhold, I trust that You love me and know what is best.
Keep me always beneath the mantle of Your mercy, until I rest at last in You.
In the silence of your heart, bring your intention before God.
Amen.
Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us.
Closing Prayer
God our Father, we thank You for the gift of these nine days, and for the loving intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe, who has prayed with us and for us at every step. We praise You, for You alone are the source of every grace, and through her motherly care You have drawn us closer to Your Son.
We ask now for the gift of perseverance: deepen our faith when it grows dim, renew our hope when the road is long, and enlarge our love so that it reaches everyone You place before us. Let the trust we have practiced in this novena take root and bear lasting fruit in our daily lives.
Into Your hands, Lord, we entrust every intention we have carried these days, both spoken and unspoken. You know our needs better than we do. Do with them what is best, in Your time and in Your way, and let us rest, always, beneath the mantle of Your mercy and the prayers of our Mother. Amen.
